Pärnu EPT residential area

Settlement of land development workers and mechanisation specialists

In 1970, the Pärnu Experimental Land Development Unit was established on the basis of the production facilities of the Pärnu Land Development Administration in Paikuse, which was merged with the Pärnu District Association of Estonian Agricultural Machinery (Pärnu EPT) in 1973. It was also decided to relocate the office and the management of this large company, which operated throughout Pärnu County, from its existing location in Pärnu-Jaagupi to Paikuse.

Paikuse then began to develop as a population centre, forming a settlement for mechanisation specialists and land development workers where a residential district of apartment buildings was established. The first apartment blocks, each with 18 flats, were built in 1972 by Pärnu KEK. Over the course of a couple of decades, this district grew to include more than 200 apartments, mainly home to young families.

In 1976, a new office building was built for Pärnu EPT. Since 1996 the building has been home to Paikuse Elementary School. Photo from the Pärnu Museum collection

Paikuse kindergarten

A kindergarten for 140 children was completed in 1981. It opened with four nursery groups for 100 children and two toddler groups for 40 children. Until 1991, the kindergarten was directly run by Pärnu EPT, after which responsibility was transferred to the local executive committee, the predecessor of the municipal government. From then on, places were guaranteed at the kindergarten for all children from Paikuse municipality, not just those whose parents worked for EPT.

As the population of this local government area close to the city grew rapidly in the early 2000s, the kindergarten soon faced a shortage of space.

An extension was opened in autumn 2007, adding 80 new places, which made it possible to open parallel age groups.

In January 2019, the Mesimumm and Seljametsa kindergartens were merged. Today, the Paikuse complex hosts 10 groups and the Seljametsa complex three, with a total of 265 children.
