Avaleht Experiences Workshop on roosimine inlay knit cuffs at Tõstamaa Handicraft Center

A century and a half ago, the women of Tõstamaa knitted gloves with unbelievably fine yarn and needles. Each glove was like a talisman – the red roosimine inlay carried power, health, and protection from bad words and looks. The pattern was not merely decorative but a message that conveyed the wearer’s faith and vitality.

Today, this tradition has gained new life – roosimine inlay patterns continue in both gloves and wrist warmers. Finely knitted wrist warmers combine traditional craftsmanship with modern design, offering warmth and deep symbolism.

In the roosimine inlay wrist warmer knitting workshop, you can be part of this heritage. Under the guidance of masters, the knitting technique is learned, and wrist warmers are made using 1.25 mm needles and 12/2 yarn (600m/100g). It is slow, calm, and meditative work – a moment where each stitch connects the past with the present.

The workshop is led by two Tõstamaa knitting masters who keep the spirit of their local handicraft alive and pass on this skill with heart.
