Traditional knitting bag workshop at Tõstamaa Handicraft Center

Avaleht Experiences Traditional knitting bag workshop at Tõstamaa Handicraft Center

Our ancestors from Tõstamaa were very thrifty and used all the colorful fabric scraps of different sizes and shapes.

Scraps of chintz fabric were carefully arranged side by side and sewn into a knitting bag, in which women kept their yarns and knitting needles to continue their handicraft at every free moment. The knitting bag became an indispensable accessory to folk costumes. Today, the knitting bag is also used as a handbag, carrying the wisdom and warmth of ancestors every day.

Under the guidance of Tõstamaa’s masters, we design the bag, cut out the details, and sew a traditional knitting bag for ourselves or as a gift.

Once the work is done, it’s worth heading to Tõstamaa Manor – a historic site that tells stories of bygone times and invites you to stroll through the manor park.

Tõstamaa is a place where time stands still – come, create something with your hands, and feel how tradition gets a new life.
