Traditional garter workshop at Tõstamaa Handicraft Center

Avaleht Experiences Traditional garter workshop at Tõstamaa Handicraft Center

A traditional garter is a braided band made of colorful wool yarn, which has been an important part of the folk culture of Kihnu and other Estonian regions for centuries.

It was used as a practical yet decorative item for fastening and had ritual significance. Traditionally, both women and men wore garters to keep stockings up: the garter was tied around the leg, under the trouser leg, the ends were inserted through holes in the trouser leg, and the garter was tied in a knot. This way, the colorful tasseled ends of the band hung beautifully on the outer side of the leg.

In the workshop, we will braid a traditional garter using ancient techniques and colorful patterns. The finished band is perfect as an accessory for folk costumes, and as a beautiful keepsake that carries the wisdom, protection, and warmth of ancestors.
