Koidula Museum

Home Conference Rooms Koidula Museum

In the former home of Johann Voldemar Jannsen (1819–1890) and Lydia Koidula (1843–1886), a permanent exhibition introduces their lives and activities in the context of the Estonian National Awakening. The house is also of cultural and historical significance as the former village school and the editorial office of the weekly newspaper Perno Postimees. The permanent exhibition is complemented by a temporary exhibition hall, where visitors can watch retrospectives of Koidula’s plays and television programs, read the newspaper Postimees, and take part in museum classes.

The Koidula Museum also includes a safe courtyard behind the house, surrounded by a garden fence, with an open-air stage and permanent seating. The museum’s park garden was Lydia’s childhood playground, where younger visitors can explore plants, observe the bustle of insect hotels, play Lolla (the childhood games of Lydia), and even step into the role of a poet themselves.
