Before World War I, he worked in Riga, the provincial capital, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW3445606 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">established<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW3445606 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0a stove pot factory there in 1906. He was an active amateur actor. In his youth, he was a member of the &#8220;Salme&#8221; society in Tori and later in the drama club of the Riga Estonian Society. The building\u00a0was completed\u00a0by the summer of 1934. Permann himself stayed near his ceramics factory on\u00a0Liiva\u00a0Street and rented out both apartments. The newly widowed pastor&#8217;s wife Emilie Hasselblatt (1861-1945) moved into the first floor with her daughter Ellen (b. 1901), a kindergarten teacher. The director of the\u00a0P\u00e4rnu\u00a0Farmers&#8217; Cooperative Bank Andrei Klein (Est. Andres Kalda, 1892-1987) moved into the second floor with his family,\u00a0servant\u00a0and nanny.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In 1938, Hans Permann, or Ants P\u00e4rnoja in Estonian, decided to sell his property on\u00a0Supeluse\u00a0Street. He then obtained the qualifications of a coastal captain at the Riga Maritime School and a long-distance captain at the Tallinn Maritime School. In 1918, he married Emilie Linin (1895-1982), the daughter of a Latvian ship mechanic, in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW162787731 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">Arhangelsk<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW162787731 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">. After the death of their only child, the captain&#8217;s family decided to adopt their daughter&#8217;s schoolmate and her best friend, Heleena Kullman (1920-?). She had grown up in the large family of Andrei Kullman (1888-1931), a shoemaker from\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW137159810 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">Luunja<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137159810 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0parish, with eight children, and had recently lost her father. Due to the girl&#8217;s mother&#8217;s objections, it was not formalised, but later on, the Behr<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137159810 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137159810 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">in family supported her in her studies, offered her the opportunity to stay at their home in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW137159810 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">P\u00e4rnu<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW137159810 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0in the summers, and, if she wished, accompany her stepfather on trips abroad on his ships.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP Selected SCXW137159810 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle2\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW160161080 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">At the time of the coup in June 1940, Heleene, who in the same year had <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">Estonianised<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0her first name as &#8216;Leen&#8217;, was on holiday in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">P\u00e4rnu<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">, staying at the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">Behrsin&#8217;s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0house on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">Supeluse<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0Street. Upon returning to Tallinn, she decided to join the communists,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">probably influenced<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0and shaped by her poor background and the attitudes of her siblings.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP Selected SCXW160161080 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW263734854 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">After the beginning of the war, Leen enrolled in a paratrooper course and, as the front approached, evacuated to the Soviet rear, where, as a German speaker, she ended up studying at an intelligence school in Kronstadt. In September 1942, she\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">was sent<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0as a spy to German-occupied Estonia. For three months, she managed to hide herself, moving\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">mainly around<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0Tartu. After arriving in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">P\u00e4rnu<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0in December, she transmitted intelligence to the Soviet rear about German ships in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">P\u00e4rnu<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0Harbour and ice conditions in the bay.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP Selected SCXW263734854 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">Leen Kullmann\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">was arrested<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0on 2 January 1943 in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">Luutsniku<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">R\u00f5uge<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0Parish, at her sister Olga&#8217;s home farm.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">Regarding<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0what happened next, official Soviet propaganda and the current\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">generally accepted<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0understanding of her future fate diverge. According to the Soviets, Kullmann did not betray her Soviet homeland and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">was shot<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0on 6 March 1943. In 2000, the newspaper &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">Postimees<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">&#8221; published another version of the story, according to which Leen Kullmann cooperated with the Germans to save herself and her loved ones. She\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">was given<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">\u00a0a new identity and escaped to the West with the retreating German troops in 1944.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP Selected SCXW65364418 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fontstyle2\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW212805104 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW212805104 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">While neither version has\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW212805104 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">been definitively confirmed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW212805104 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"Body Text\">, what is certain is that Soviet propaganda made Leen Kullman a martyr, who was posthumously or &#8220;posthumously&#8221; awarded the honorary title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1965.
