Director Thomas has had a long day filled with extraordinarily bad auditions for his new production, when suddenly, in enters the intrusive and powerful actress Vanda, whose first name coincides with that of the play's main character. Initially skeptical, Thomas is surprised by Vanda's embarrassingly precise knowledge of both the play and the novella on which the production is based. As Thomas assists Vanda in reading the script together, embodying the masochistic male lead himself, the role-playing evolves into much more than acting. It becomes an intense and erotic spectacle. The main characters of David Ives' play are masculine and feminine sexuality, exploring themes of submission, domination, and power with fast and changing language. In the production, reality and pretense blur into vague lines, and the question “who prevails?” has a different answer each time.
“Venus in Fur” is based on the novella of the same name (1869), which is the most well-known work by Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. The term "masochism" is derived from the writer's name.
We assume the production will be interesting for both younger and older generations. It is rich in poetry and visuality. Masoch differs from de Sade in that he lacks obscenity. He is maximally aesthetic.
Premiere on 02.10.2024 in the chamber hall of Sakala 3 Theatre House.
Duration of the performance 2h 20min, with one intermission.
