On January 23 at 17:30, the Estonian Health Museum researcher-curator Anna Rinaldo will visit Pärnu Museum to introduce her book published at the end of last year, "From Sauna to Syringe: A Century of Stories about Estonians' Health," which offers an exciting retrospective on the health history of Estonians.
This everyday topic opens up through examples and stories that provide a piece of Estonians' social history in a popular science approach. Experience stories placed in a societal framework help to understand whether and how past physical experiences such as childbirth, diseases, hunger, or doctor visits differ from today. The discussion mainly revolves around experiences and health landscapes from the 20th century, with occasional jumps to enriching nuances in the preceding and following centuries. This involves exciting chapters such as "Steam, Lovely Medicine!", "Sanatoriums - Vouchers, Vacation, and Treatment", "Healthier Kids, Stronger Nation", "The Young Hardly Believe the Old", "Forgotten Souls and Lost Dreams - Life in Soviet Children's Homes", "From Rubidoctor to Smallpox Vaccine" and others.
Did you know that Estonia once produced a completely unique antidote serum in the world - a venom antidote for vipers? For this purpose, the institute needed to collect a large amount of viper venom; the annual "viper requirement" was nearly a thousand vipers. To gather the required amount, people were called to catch vipers and a written guide on how to catch vipers was sent to all interested parties.
We will hear similar and many other interesting stories about the health history of Estonians during the lecture.
