For Women's Day, the Hiiu kannel duo Puuluup! will travel to Pärnu

Puuluup started in 2014, and its members are Ramo Teder (as a solo artist Pastacas) and Marko Veisson (who is also an anthropologist). Their first album “Süüta mu lumi” was released in 2018, and the second album “Viimane suusataja” in 2021.

In addition to numerous performances in Estonia, they have performed in Belgium, China, Spain, Croatia, India, England, Italy, Japan, Canada, Korea, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, France, Sweden, Germany, Slovenia, Finland, Taiwan, Czech Republic, Chile, Ukraine, Hungary, and the USA.

Together with the band 5MIINUST, they participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2024 representing Estonia in Sweden and reached the final round. Shortly before that, they also released a joint album “Kannatused ehk külakiigel pole stopperit”.

Puuluup, which crosses Hiiu kannel with electronics, balances on the edge of tradition and contemporary music styles, flirting with world music, underground, and pop. Puuluup guides the vibrations of the Hiiu kannel's horsehair strings through effect blocks and a looper, using alternative playing techniques and sound creation possibilities. The soft rustle of the Hiiu kannel is joined by electronically amplified echoes, taps, creaks, and crackles. The music sometimes has a dance-like pulsating rhythm and sometimes is cinematic and dark, sneaking in the chambers of ancient Vormsi talharpa players and spreading from them. It sounds like tradition-impregnated original creations, references to punk classics, and romantic neo-zombie post-folk with educational content.

The men themselves modestly describe their creation as follows: “Our main message in the context of folk music is that, look, you can do all kinds of things with the Hiiu kannel, learn the instrument and create your music. This is what could be useful for folk music from us.”
