Hendrik Relve, Kaupo Kikkas, Mark Soosaar – photo exhibition SAVAGES
“Alone we are trees, but together a forest,” as Lennart Meri used to say.
If so, are we indeed a forest people? Or perhaps savages? In the dark or bright sense of the word?
You will find answers for yourself and for all of us at the exhibition by photographers Hendrik Relve, Kaupo Kikkas, and Mark Soosaar.
For decades, these men have captured rare trees and avenues that can no longer be found in nature. But they live on in photos and films. As do the people who continue to live among us thanks to the trees they planted and their personal memories…
Annual exhibition of the Estonian Painters' Association UNTOLD STORIES
As individuals, we each have our own story to tell. Artists have always had the opportunity to infuse their personal experiences into their work, developing a certain meta-language and symbol system to cultivate their independent artist ego or sovereignty.
Since the start of Russia's war of aggression in 2022, collective traumas and historical blind spots have been openly discussed in public spaces. Estonia is cleansing itself of red monument pollution, and despite the distressing threat of war and the crazy economic situation, there is still a new spirit in the air, a new sense of freedom, and the courage to name things as they are. The phrase ‘untold story’ suggests something that has not been spoken about before or wasn’t even desired to be spoken about?
In my opinion, not enough has been said about how successful Estonia's new independence period has been, how significantly our living environment has changed over the last thirty years, and how beautiful our country truly is! Perhaps superstition has kept Estonians from loudly proclaiming great joy, or it seems that until happiness has reached every one of us, it is not appropriate to declare Estonia a land of miracles?
The organizers do not wish to prescribe the tone of creativity in any way; each story is valuable, and a mosaic is richer with more shades represented. The general exhibition synopsis is designed to engage the majority of the Painters’ Association membership. The exhibition concept's refinement and the delineation of the collection of works will occur based on reactions and feedback that arise from interacting with participants. Therefore, this year's theme should be considered more as a sociological survey—as painting and painters are inherently untamed, more individualists than herders. This is one of the great charms of an art form with individual authorship like painting.
