On February 27th at 5:00 PM, folklorist Madis Arukask will meet music and literature enthusiasts in the large hall of Pärnu Central Library to talk about regilaul.

In the year of the book, it is fitting to also discuss texts that have never been written and created for printing in a book. This so-called "unwritten literature" is folklore in its various forms of expression. The term "poetry" does not narrowly represent poetry in this context, but rather the worldview and intellectual realm of ancient people in a broader sense. What was the intellectual world of our people in its oldest preserved reflection - regilaul? What was the mindset of pre-literate people, and how far into the past can we look with the help of folk songs? These topics can be pondered together with folklorist and religious studies researcher, Associate Professor Madis Arukask from the University of Tartu.

Originating from Pärnu, Madis Arukask defended his doctoral thesis "Aspects of Narrative Regilaul. The Genre and Structure of 19th Century Seto Lyroepic Regilauls" at the University of Tartu in 2003. Later, Arukask has focused on the study of Vepsian folklore. From fieldwork in Vepsia, the documentary "Buried Alive" (2006) has been created. In addition to academic research, Arukask has played guitar in the folk metal band Raud-Ants.

Participation in the meet-up evenings is free. You are welcome!
