Literary Meeting at the Koidula Museum / Guest Ilona Martson
Times and prices
30.01.25
January 30 is the day of Estonian literature and also the start of the Year of the Estonian Book!
On this festive day, we continue our series of literary meetings, and at 6 PM, we have ILONA MARTSON as our guest.
Ilona Martson (Kivirähk): "I have lived almost my entire life in Tallinn, except for my university years in Tartu from 1988 to 1993, where I studied journalism. But already as a student, I started working in the culture department of the Päevaleht newspaper. First, I was a reporter there, then the editor of the literary supplement Arkaadia, and finally the head of the culture department. At the beginning of 2004, I became the editor-in-chief of the children's magazine Täheke, a position I have held for 20 years.
Besides that, I have been involved in translating and editing fiction – I have translated or edited around 30 books for children and 20 for adults. I have mainly translated from Russian and recently increasingly from Ukrainian. I have favorite authors whom I keep returning to: Lyudmila Ulitskaya, Teffi, Narine Abgarjan, Marusja Klimova, Varlam Shalamov, Daniil Harms, and in children's literature, Grigory Oster.
Lately, I have also discovered play translation for myself – last year, the plays "Eisenstein" (Mikhail Durnenkov) and "Totalitarian Novel" (Marius Ivaškevicius) premiered at the Estonian Drama Theatre. I have three adult children, one grandchild, and my husband Andrus Kivirähk is an Estonian writer and humorist."
