It Only Seems That Way to You

Art Exhibition by Helle Lõhmus and Maret Suurmets Kuura

At the Endla Theatre Gallery, the joint exhibition by Maret Suurmets Kuura and Helle Lõhmus, titled "It Only Seems That Way to You," showcases the paintings of both artists. Maret Suurmets Kuura presents works that engage viewers with themes usually hidden, themes that have made people doubt themselves without reason, yet live in hope and expectation. The exhibition features paintings with intense color schemes, strong and multilayered tonalities, with themes drawn from nature, deep human feelings, everyday life, life itself, doubts, but also hope and belief in miracles. As a result, the exhibit offers paintings with varied structures and feelings, as each work reflects its own perspective.

Helle Lõhmus presents nature-themed paintings at the exhibition. There are also works created this year. True to her style, the artist’s paintings reflect experiences of what she has witnessed with her own eyes, whether it's the cherry tree visible from her home window painted in a special way. With the seascapes depicted, the artist returns to places she has previously visited and found enchanting. These places remain as fixed in the memory of feelings as heavy stones in the shoreline. These are places by the sea. A stone is a good place to sit and watch the sea, and let one's thoughts wander beyond the horizon. Like the starting block of dreams.

In conclusion, the phrase "it only seems that way to you" invites us to pause and look deeper within ourselves. Our perceptions are not always true or absolute, but change and grow over time. Nature around us offers strength and inspiration to perhaps reach a momentary clarity and soothes the soul, even if our thoughts change over time.  What is important is an open heart and curiosity, to share our stories and listen to others, to create truly meaningful connections.
