Backpacks on..... and off to the woods for a hike!

On the 16th of March at 10:00, a traditional movement event "Hike on Sakala Road" dedicated to the death anniversary of C. R. Jakobson will take place from Vanaõue to Kurgja, organized jointly by the Southern Estonia region of RMK Visitor Management Department and the C. R. Jakobson Farm Museum/Estonian Rural Museums Foundation. On the 19th of March this year, it will be 143 years since the death of C. R. Jakobson.

Organized since 1961, the Sakala Road hike follows a forest path between Kurgja and Vanaõue, the same path that C. R. Jakobson used to take to Viljandi to edit the newspaper. The length of the hike is 12.2 km.

Starting point of the trail: In Viljandi County, Põhja-Sakala municipality, opposite Vanaõue Recreation Center at the start of the Sakala Road hiking trail.

Rest breaks can be taken at Maltsaare rest area and near the Saeveski forest hut. Tea and cookies will be offered at the Maltsaare rest area. If possible, please bring your own cup/mug/teacup.

At Saeveski, hikers will find a campfire, tea, snacks, and a display about the nature figures of the year in Estonia.
Each participant will receive a medal upon reaching the finish line. At Kurgja, in the threshing room of the C. R. Jakobson Farm Museum, warm soup and tea await the hikers. Participants can visit the mill, barn, sauna, and stable for free, and explore the permanent exhibition in the manor house at half price.

Cars can be parked in the parking lots at Kurgja. Parking map here.

From Kurgja, 2 buses with a total of 95 seats are available to take those interested to the starting point of the hike at Vanaõue. A seat on the bus costs 3 €. The bus departs from Kurgja at 9:15.
The participation fee for the hike is 6 € (free for preschoolers).
You can purchase the hike ticket and bus seat from Fienta. To reserve a seat on the bus, buy a ticket in advance from Fienta.
If you wish to pay for the hike on-site, please fill out the registration form here so we can plan for a medal and soup for you at the end of the hike.

We look forward to meeting on this lovely spring-awaiting forest trail!
