As individuals, we each have our own story to tell. Artists have always had the opportunity to sublimate their personal experiences into their work, developing a certain meta-language and symbol system to cultivate their independent artist-ego or sovereignty.
Collective traumas and the white spots of history have been openly discussed in public spaces since the beginning of Russia's war of aggression in 2022. Estonia is cleansing itself of Soviet-era monuments, and despite the distressing threat of war and the difficult economic situation, there is a sense of a new breath in the air, a new feeling of freedom, and the courage to call things by their proper names. The phrase 'Untold story' suggests something that perhaps has not been spoken about before, or for which there was no desire to speak?
In my opinion, there hasn't been enough talk about how successful Estonia's new independence period has been, the great strides our living environment has taken in the past thirty years, and how truly beautiful our country is! Perhaps superstition has kept Estonians from loudly proclaiming great joy, or it seems that until happiness has reached every last one of us, it is not seemly to boast about Estonia as a land of wonders?
The organizers do not wish to dictate the tone of the works in any way; each story is valuable, and the mosaic is richer the more shades it contains. The synopsis of the general exhibition is designed to engage/include most members of the painters' association, with the exhibition concept and composition of works being refined through reactions and feedback that emerge in communication with those wishing to participate. Therefore, this year's theme should be taken more as a sociological study – after all, painting and painters are unyielding, more individualists than herd people. This is one of the greatest charms of a form of art with individual authorship, such as painting.
