The fairy tale "The Darning Needle" by Hans Christian Andersen and the crafting workshop at the exhibition "Oh, Come Across the Snow... to My Window"

On January 25 at 3 PM
At the Koidula Museum

Estonians' acquaintance with the works of the great Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen dates back to 1866, when the fairy tale "The Darning Needle" appeared in the 25th issue of the Estonian Postimees Reading Room. It was most likely translated into Estonian (albeit from German) by Lydia Koidula, who was familiar with Andersen's tales since childhood. But why "The Darning Needle"? Because this fairy tale values the courage to remain true to oneself, which was both a challenge and a dream for an emerging nation at the time.

One of the curators of the exhibition "Oh, Come Across the Snow... to My Window", museum researcher Kristiina Vunk, invites you to discover the story of "The Darning Needle".

Let's craft and draw... enjoy the beauty of winter and the enchanting world of Andersen's fairy tales!

The number of spots is limited. Discounted tickets are on sale on the museum's website and at the Koidula Museum ticket office until January 24 at 11:59 PM. If spaces are available, tickets can be purchased on-site before the event.

Exhibition "Oh, Come Across the Snow... to My Window" in the Koidula Museum Garden

It is likely translated into Estonian (albeit from German) by Lydia Koidula, who was familiar with Andersen's fairy tales since childhood. But why "The Darning Needle"? Because this fairy tale values the courage to stay true to oneself, which was both a challenge and a dream for an emerging nation at the time.

Next year marks 220 years since Andersen was born. Thanks to Henrik Sepamaa, we Estonians are among the few small nations that can read his stories in our own language.

The winter exhibition "Oh, Come Across the Snow… to My Window" at the Koidula Museum branch of the Pärnu Museum is inspired by Andersen's fairy tales and paper cutouts, as it is known that the writer also worked as an amateur artist, drawing, making paper cutouts, and crafting collages.

The garden, dressed in the winter attire of Koidula's childhood home, extends its soft velvet paw and invites everyone – both children and adults who are still children... children of heart – to peek into the magical and dream windows and seek and find light and warmth during the dark and cold times.

The exhibition can be viewed independently (during museum opening hours and with a museum ticket), but special programs with storytellers, fairy tales, and workshops will be held at the museum and exhibition throughout the duration (with a special event ticket).
