On the 25th day of the Candle Month in 1871, Lesja Ukrainka was born. At that time, Lydia Koidula was already 28 years old. Both Lesja and Lydia were the first female poets of their nations whose poetry inspired native language education and the formation of a country.
We invite Pärnu residents to the Museum of New Art to celebrate Lesja Ukrainka's birthday on Tuesday, February 25th at 17.00.
We will listen to songs by Lesja Ukrainka and Lydia Koidula in both Estonian and Ukrainian, and sing together in both languages.
Elsa Virta will play the Estonian kannel, and the Ukrainian kannel, or bandura, will be played by Inna Lisnjak from the Tartu Literary Museum. She will also lead the Ukrainian children who study in Pärnu city schools in singing.
Elmar Trink, the head of the Koidula Museum, will introduce Lydia Koidula.
