Annual Exhibition of the Estonian Painters' Association
UNTOLD STORIES
at the Museum of New Art
opening on March 8 at 14:00

As individuals, we each have our own story to tell. Artists have always had the opportunity to sublimate their personal experiences into their creations, to develop a certain metalanguage and system of symbols to cultivate their independent artist-ego or sovereignty.
Since the beginning of Russia's aggressive war in 2022, collective traumas and the blank spots of history have been discussed openly in public space. Estonia is cleansing itself of the contamination of red monuments, and despite the oppressive threat of war and the dire economic situation, there is still a new breath of fresh air, a new sense of freedom, and the courage to call things by their proper names. The phrase 'untold story' refers to something that perhaps couldn't be spoken of before or wasn't desired to be?

I feel that not enough has been said about how successful Estonia's new independence period has been, how significantly our living environment has changed over the past thirty years, and how beautiful our country truly is! Perhaps superstition has kept Estonians from loudly proclaiming their great joy, or it seems that until luck has reached each and every doorstep, it's not proper to shout about Estonia as a land of wonders?
The organizers do not wish to dictate the tone of creativity in any way; each story is valuable, and the mosaic is richer the more shades it contains. The general exhibition synopsis has been composed to engage and involve most members of the Painters' Association, with the exhibition concept's clarification and the collection of works developing more likely from reactions and feedback in interactions with those wishing to participate. Thus, this year's theme should be seen more as a sociological study – after all, painting and painters are defiant, more individualists than herd people. This is one of the greatest charms of an art form with individual authorship, like painting.
